Genus Lucanus is the largest stag beetle genus containing about 58 species with 4 in the U.S. Except Lucanus mazama (LeConte, 1861), which occurs in Arziona, all three species are found in southeastern states. All four are regularly reared, but L. mazama and L. placidus are rather considered uncommonly handled. Adults of four species are attracted to lights. Larvae takes about an year to adulthood. L. elaphus is the largest species with longer mandibles. Three others are similarly around 30-40mm.
