You can find melanistic animals such as mammals, reptiles, even fish.
In general, animals that carry melanistic gene tend to be more pricier than other traits in pet trade.
For example: Super Cappuccino in crested gecko morph, melanisitic in leachianus gecko (usually koghis), and black night in leopard gecko morph.
Here is the reason why,
Melanistic gene is recessive gene. Means, Animal should carry a pair of recessive melanistic gene to be visual melanistic animals.
Here is the number of study.
Visual Melanistic + Normal
100% : 100% het Melanisitic
Visual Melanistic + Visual Melanistic
100% : Visual Melanisitic
Visual Melanistic + 100% het Melanistic
50% : 100% het Melanistic
50% : Visual Melanistic
100% het Melanistic + 100% het Melanistic
25% : Normal
50% : 100% het Melanistic
25% : Melanistic
*Breeders call these 100% het Melanistic & Normal as 66% het Melanistic. So the animal might carry melanistic gene or maybe not.
100% het Melanistic + Normal
50% : 100% het Melanistic
50% : Normal
*Breeders call these 100% het Melanistic & Normal as 50% het Melanistic. Basically, 50% of chance to be 100% het Melanistic. So the animal might carry melanistic gene or maybe not.
Like you see in the case study, it is very low chance to get visual melanistic animal. This is the reason why melanistic animals tend to be pricier than other traits.
