Axanthic Crested Gecko

What is Axanthic Crested Gecko?

Name of Axanthic is very Common in reptile breeding. You can find that name under ball pythons, frogs, and even crested geckos. Axanthic gene removes red or yellow pigment on their body. Because of that character of the gene, Axanthic gene makes animal color to blue or black.

Axanthic morph in crested gecko first discovered in the UK and later imported by Brian Butler at Altitute Exotics.

Characteristic of Axanthic Crested Gecko

Axanthic is related to "color". Most crested Gecko contains yellow, red, or cream colors but because of what Axanthic gene give effect to animal, often Axanthic crested gecko becomes black and white. Sometimes, Axanthic crested gecko carries little bit of yellow tone, but it's rare.

These are examples of Axanthic Crested Gecko

Axanthic is recessive gene

To produce visual Axanthic creasted gecko, you need to have crested gecko that has axanthic recessive gene.

Pair could be Visual Axanthic X Visual Axanthic, Visual Axanthic X het Axanthic, or het Axanthic X het Axanthic.

If you breed between 2 Visual Axanthic, you will get 100% Visual Axanthic. (However, it will be very pricy to start)

1.Visual Axathic + Normal

  • 100% : 100% het Axanthic

2.Visual Axanthic + Visual Axanthic

  • 100% : Visual Axanthic

3. Visual Axanthic + 100% het Axanthic

  • 50% : Visual Axanthic

  • 50% : 100% het Axanthic

4.100% het Axanthic + 100% het Axanthic

  • 25% : Visual Axanthic

  • 25% : Normal

  • 50% : 100% het Axanthic

  • (If you breed this case, all normal looking gecko babies call 66% het Axanthic, because you can't find out which one is 100% het Axanthic. Simply, baby could be 66% of 100% het Axanthic)

5. 100% het Axanthic + Normal

  • 50% : 100% het Axanthic

  • 50% : Normal

  • (If you breed this case, all normal looking gecko babies call 50% het Axanthic, because you can't find out which one is 100% het Axanthic. Simply, baby could be 50% of 100% het Axanthic)

Many breeders make outline of 100% het Axanthic from normal or 100% het axanthic females because of following reasons.

  1. Breeder can produce more Axanthic babies later season from those 100% het Axanthic.

  2. Breeder can produce healthy animals from outlines. (this is the most important part why we need to keep outline, if genetic pool is too small, most likely babies from small genetic pool will not be healthy.
