English Name: Muller Rainbow Stag Beetles Scientific Name: Phalacrognathus muelleri Macleay, 1885
Origin: Australia, New Guinea Size: 20 - 60mm (0.8 - 2.4") Rarity Level: ★★★★ Description: Muller Rainbow Stag Beetle is the most beautiful stag beetle in the world with various colors blend in all together in their body! They are endemic to Australia, and is currently protected by law to conserve their population. So are these actually from Australia? NO! They are captive reared specimens from Japan and Taiwan, where legally imported then bred successfully, and these beetles are legally imported into the US, into our hands. Because of their beauty and conservation status, this stag beetle has been the official symbol of the Entomological Society of Queensland since 1973!
The species name Muller is derived from a German-Australian physician, geographer, and most notably, a botanist, Ferdinand von Müller (30 June 1825 - 10 October 1896). He was appointed as government botanist for the then colony of Victoria (in Australia) by Governor Charles La Trobe in 1853, and later director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne (in Australia). He also founded the National Herbarium of Victoria.
Muller Rainbow Stag Beetles in captivity is very easy. They lay a lot of eggs, and takes about half year to a full year to adulthood from eggs. Although their coloration is very beautiful, and resembles rainbow, just like the name refers to, there can be lots of color variation with more of one solid color, like green, red, brown, black, or purple! Its normal color is easy to access, but green, red, brown, black or purple can be challenging as it is something to do with DNA!
