The species name Melly is derived from a cotton merchant of Swiss-origin, Andrew Melly (12 May 1802 - 19 January 1851) who settled in England and was a keen amateur entomologist, naturalist, and specimen collector. Many insects are described from his collections, and are named after him upon his death in trip to Egypt at the edge of the Nubian desert. His biological collections of nearly 35,000 specimens!! are now deposited in the Geneva Natural History Museum.
